More than 5000 Pittsburgh residents took giant steps for their heart health on Saturday, Sept. 29 at Heinz Field in the American Heart Association's annual Start! Heart Walk. The non-competitive, three-mile walk which has raised almost $600 million for research and education since it was launched in 1994, has taken place in about 450 cities this year. Leslie and her walk team energized the crowd with a walking warm up that got everyone moving.

On January 13, 2008 the Walk Team provided an energetic 1 mile "Leslie Walk" in the Grand Court of Robinson Town Center Mall in Pittsburgh, PA. Many walkers male and female of all ages participated in this AOM monthly event. The Walk Team was led by Joanne Carrigan (Grandma Jo); other members of the Walk Team present were Linda N, Linda A., Cheryl, Nicole, Christine, and Christina.
America On The Move is a national initiative to improve the health of individuals by encouraging moderate increases in physical activity and small reductions in the amount of food that you eat. AOM encourages everyone to make the following adjustments to daily life:
- Adding 2,000 extra walking steps to your day (the equivalent of 20 extra minutes of activity).
- Reducing your food intake by 100 calories (the equivalent of 1/2 of a donut or 2 cookies).
America On The Move in Pittsburgh is hosted by the University of Pittsburgh and directed by Dr.John M. Jakicic, Ph.D., Chair, Department of Health and Physical Activity.

Pittsburgh 250 and Fit

"Pittsburgh 250 and Fit" is a new campaign, with the goal of getting 250,000 people to commit to regular exercise. It's being started in time for the city's 250th anniversary. Walk Leaders, Joanne and Carol kicked off the press conference with a walk demonstration, along with the Pirate Parrot! Olympic Medalist, Rodger Kingdom was a keynote speaker for the event and joined our Walk Leaders on stage. Thanks to everyone that attended! Let's keep walking into the next 250 years!

Monster Stomp

Leslie and her walk team energized the crowd with a 10 minute warm up at the Monster Stomp - a 5K walk which was designed to raise funds for multiple sclerosis. Leslie featured her newly formed "teen walk team" in leading the crowd. This walk's special event was a "fright walk". All kids were invited to dress in their Halloween costume and walk a lap around the track.
